Mesothelioma is a form of cancer, that is can be caused by exposure to asbestos. Malignant cancer cells develop in the mesothelium protective lining, which is a lining that covers most of the body's internal organs. It is most commonly found in the pleura, outer lining of the lungs and chest cavity, but it may also occur in the peritoneum lining of the abdominal cavity, or the pericardium sac that surrounds the heart.
Many who have mesothelioma worked in job fields in which they inhaled asbestos particles, or have been exposed to asbestos dust and fibers in other ways.
Symptoms of mesothelioma cancer may not even appear until 20 to 50 years after exposure to asbestos. Initial symptoms may include shortness of breath and pain in the chest due to an accumulation of fluid in the pleural space, which are often symptoms of pleural mesothelioma.
